En dag møder han den illegale indvandrer Melquiades Estrada (Julio Cedillo), som han tager under sine vinger, og de to bliver både kollegaer og venner. Samtidigt ankommer den unge grænsebetjent Mike Norton (Barry Pepper) til byen. Han lever i et kærlighedsløst ægteskab med sin high school kæreste, han er rastløs og bruger derfor jobbet til at afreagere på. En dag, da han vogter over nogle af de store, tomme sletter, hører han pludselig skud. Uden at tænke over det skyder han tilbage. Mike rammer Melquiades, der blot var ved at jage en prærieulv væk, og han dør på stedet. Da Pete finder ud af, hvad der er sket, og da det går op for ham, at alle er ligeglade med en sølle, illegal indvandrers skæbne, beslutter han sig for at tage sagen i egne hænder. Han graver Melquiades' lig op, kidnapper Mike og sætter kurs mod Melquiades' hjemby i Mexico, for at han kan få en rigtig begravelse.
